6th January |

Reyes Magos (the day of the three Wisemen). Arrival of the Reyes
Magos by boat in the Port of Mazarron; parade through the
main streets and handing out toys to the children in the Plaza
(square) de las Comunidades Autónomas; continue to Mazarron;
another parade through the main streets and handing out toys
to the children in San Andrés. The nativity play of the Reyes
Magos is celebrated the following day. |

19th March |
|
San José (Saint Joseph’s Day). Patron Saint festivals of the Port
of Mazarron. From up to a week before popular verbenas (open-air
celebrations), sporting activities, monumental Falla (giant
statue) in the Playa (beach) del Puerto with giant satirical
dolls representing the events of the last year, carrera de
antorchas (torch race). |

Mazarrón and the Port. Easter Thursday and Friday, processions from 9pm. |

Fiesta del Corpus |
|
La Atalaya district. Popular verbenas (open-air celebrations), gastronomy sampling. |

The port of Mazarron. Processions with altars in the street, parade
of children dressed in their communion outfits. |

San Antonio (Saint Anthony’s Day). Cañada de Gallego district. |

24th June |
|
San Juan (Saint John’s day). Cañadas del Romero district. Sporting,
cultural and folk activities, popular verbenas (open-air celebrations),
musical performances, gastronomy sampling, procession of the
Saint. |

Summer Festivals |
|
Port of Mazarron. From the start of July to the end of August sporting
and cultural activities, popular verbenas (open-air celebrations)
and musical performances take place almost daily. |

16th July |
|
Virgen del Carmen. (the virgin Carmen) Port of Mazarron. Mass in
La Lonja del Pescado, Sea – Earth procession with the Patron
Saint of fishermen. Dozens of boats garlanded with multicoloured
flags accompany the virgin during the procession. |
Leyva
district. Popular verbenas (open-air celebrations), sporting
and cultural activities, procession of the virgin. |
25th
July

Santiago
de Apóstol (Apostle of Saint James). Ifre- Pastrana district.
Popular verbenas (open-air celebrations), sporting and cultural
activities. |

Asunción
de la Virgen (Assumption of the Virgin). Port of Mazarron.
Popular verbenas (open air celebrations), sporting and cultural

San
Bartolomé (Saint Bartholomew) Gañuelas district. Procession
of the Saint, popular verbenas (open-air celebrations), typical
dances, sporting activities. |

September |
Santa
Maria (Saint Mary’s Day). La Majada district. Popular verbenas
(open-air celebrations), musical performances, election of
the festival Queens, sporting, cultural activities and chocolatada
(chocolate celebrations). |
17th
November |
Fiestas
del Milagro (Miracle festivals) Bolnuevo and Mazarron. The
Sunday before the 17th they take the Patron Saint La Purísima
from Bolnuevo to Mazarron; the Sunday after they take her
back to her hermitage in Bolnuevo. During this week acts such
as the ofrenda floral (floral offering) to the virgin, processions
and religious activities take place. |
The
Sunday of La Romería (the pilgrimage), Moor and Christian
parades take place, commemorating the Moorish invasion of
our coast when the virgin miraculously interceded, expelling
the Algerians from our coast. It was the early morning of
17th November 1585. Popular verbenas (open-air celebrations),
musical performances, gastronomy tasting with typical dishes
such as ‘Moraga’, ‘Migas’, ‘ruleras’ etc take place. |
4th
December |
Santa
Bárbara (Saint Barbara). Mazarron. Procession with the Saint
(Patron saint of miners), to the mine basin. Mass, popular
games, verbenas (open-air celebrations). |
8th
December |
La
Purísima. Mazarron. The festivals begin the Sunday before
the 17th November. Throughout this time there are sporting
and cultural activities, popular verbenas (open-air celebrations),
musical performances, the election of the Festival Queen of
children, young adults and adults. It’s the big town festival
in honour of the Patron Saint of the town. |
28th
December |
Santos
Inocentes (April’s Fools day) Las Balsicas district. One of
the oldest festivals in the region. Demonstration of “rebuznos”,
typical dances and songs called “pujadas”, gastronomy tasting,
mass for the Patron Saint. |
